Start Your Binder With One Page

Most binders never get started because the whole job feels too big. So don't start with the whole job. Start with one page.

Pick the page you'd need first

Think about the last time something went wrong and you had to look for information in a hurry. That's your first page. For many households, it's one of these:

  • Emergency contacts and who to call first
  • Medications and allergies for each person at home
  • Your pet's vet, food and daily routine

Write down what only you know

Skip anything you can look up in a minute. A good first page holds what would otherwise leave with you:

  1. Who to call, and in what order
  2. Where the important things are kept
  3. What someone needs to do first

Put it where people will look

A page helps only if someone can find it without you. Tell the people who'd need it where it lives.

Done and findable beats complete and hidden.
